For fans of Powerless, The Prison Healer, and Dance of Thieves, The Veiled Kingdom delivers an enjoyable romantasy experience with a hint of spice.

This story follows the classic trope of a powerless princess in a kingdom brimming with magic. Nyra, born without magic and rejected by her ruthless father—who would prefer her dead than see her as his heir—finds herself cast out. After a year of surviving on the streets, she becomes entangled in the rebellion. To stay alive, she must conceal her true identity, as both her father and the rebels would see her as a threat. But when her heart gets involved, things become even more complicated.
I absolutely loved this book! It’s the kind of story you devour in one sitting—fast-paced, easy to read, and addictive. While the plot isn’t overly complex, it has a charm in its simplicity, proving that sometimes less can be more.
The only reason I didn’t give it a full five stars is the lack of romantic development. Nyra is a 19-year-old protagonist, but the transition from a subtle romantic connection to steamy scenes escalated way too quickly—like jumping from a level 1 to a level 8 spice in just a few sentences! While I’m all for a good spicy moment, a bit more buildup would have felt more authentic to her character and the story.
It’s evident that this is the first installment in a series. There’s solid world-building and hints of character development, but some aspects feel a bit rushed or underexplored. I hope this will be picked up in the second book.
Overall, I’d highly recommend The Veiled Kingdom to romantasy lovers. It’s a compelling read, and I’m eagerly looking forward to diving into the second book to see how the story unfolds!
