What I loved most? The characters. We don’t just get a morally grey man (which is already amazing), but also a morally grey woman, and I am here for it! Their chemistry was off the charts, but it wasn’t just about the spice—although, trust me, there’s plenty of that, and it’s 🔥🔥🔥🔥. The way their personalities clashed and meshed at the same time made it impossible not to root for them, flaws and all. I love that Emily doesn’t rely on tired tropes like a damsel in distress waiting to be saved. Her heroines fight their own battles, and it’s so refreshing.

As a big Disney fan, I couldn’t get enough of the subtle nods to The Little Mermaid. The seashells, the clever names, the “poor unfortunate souls” moment—it’s all there for those of us who love catching these little Easter eggs. But what’s so great is that this isn’t just a retelling. It’s an entirely unique story with its own world, its own rules, and its own magic.

And the nicknames? Perfect. I found myself grinning like a fool every time one popped up. Emily has such a gift for making these details feel natural and endearing instead of forced. That’s one of the reasons her books stay with me long after I finish them. Hexed is no exception. It’s a book I know I’ll reread more times than I can count because every time, I’ll probably catch something new.
