As a self-declared mood reader, sometimes I want soft and sweet, and other times… I want chaos, danger, and morally questionable decisions. This time? I wanted a dark romantasy without fae wings or sparkling crowns. Just grit, spice, and a bit of violence. And Kingmakers – Year One absolutely delivered.
Right from page one, I was hooked. The concept? Utterly unique. A secret mafia school where the children of crime families are trained to become heirs, assassins, spies, or enforcers. It’s like Hogwarts without magic but with more blood, bullets, and sexual tension. What more could I ask for?
The cast is diverse and deliciously chaotic. Each family has its own vibe, politics, and brand of messed-up parenting. At first, I was a little sad that only the main characters seemed to get real development. But—plot twist!—the rest of the series follows other characters. So that emotional depth? It’s coming. And I am so here for it.
One of my favorite things was the multiple POVs. It gave insight into different perspectives, even the more twisted ones. At one point, when a character full-on stalks his crush, I wasn’t even mad—I was just like, “Yep. Checks out.” It gave me You (Netflix) vibes in the best possible way. The writing is lush and addictive, making it way too easy to lose track of time and fall deep into this morally gray universe.
Now, warning: this book has some dark themes. It’s not for the faint-hearted. There’s spice, violence, betrayal, and those glorious “enemies to lovers” and “friends to lovers” tropes we dark romance fans live for. If you’re here for mafia intrigue, twisted loyalties, personal growth, and a whole lot of tension—this book’s for you. If not? You might want to keep walking.
I finished Year One and immediately peeked at the blurbs for the rest of the series—and let me tell you: I’m already mentally scheduling a reading marathon. Also, those covers? Gorgeous. Shelf-worthy. Instagram-worthy. I’m obsessed.
Can’t wait to dive into Year Two. Consider me initiated into the Kingmakers world.
